The overlap between high sensitivity and highly intuitive…
(Audio Transcript)
You know those moments when you just know?
You know.
You know exactly what you need.
You know that something is going to turn out just fine.
You know this is a moment to take a step back.
Have you ever walked into a room or met someone and immediately knew you needed to walk away? Get out of that room, that class, that meeting, cross the street and walk in a different direction.
Take a turn that is not your regular route to where you are headed.
These are common and familiar examples of your intuition at work, your inner wisdom, your higher self communicating with you.
Do you remember such moments as a child?
Do you remember these moments as a child, knowing, simply knowing for yourself?
Children are wise and are also intuitive, just like we were, almost all of us when we were little, knowing, wise, aware.
Recalling how we were as children and the wisdom we already carried when young often helps us open to the possibility that our children, whether young or growing, also walk with an intuition and knowing deep, beautiful wisdom asking to be expressed.
Cultivating Intuition
Many parents today want to encourage their children to tune into their intuition, to grow up remembering and being attentive to who they are and the soul path they wish to walk throughout their human journey.
Yet often, when your child is not only highly intuitive but also highly sensitive, it is hard to distinguish when they are guided by their sensitivity, a moment we might want to help them regulate, and when they are guided by their intuition, a moment in which we want to encourage and empower.
High sensitivity is often a reaction to various triggers coming from outside of us. One can take the noise and thrive in it. Another, more sensitive, becomes overwhelmed. Once overwhelmed, hearing ourselves becomes more challenging.
Some children who are both highly sensitive and highly aware retreat into themselves because that’s the only space where they feel safe from the noise. And sadly, for so many, their surroundings are noisy.
As a parent observing these moments, you may ask, “Is my child now retreating within because they are overwhelmed? Or are they going within to listen to their soul speaking to them?”
How do you know which is which, and accordingly, how to guide them?
If you have read my books or listened to any of the information I share, you know where I start. I’ve learned that so much can be understood and healed through us, the parents.
What about you?
Are you both highly sensitive and highly intuitive? Were you as a child? Or maybe your child followed their other parent, and while you don’t have these experiences yourself, you can see exactly where these beautiful traits come from.
Most highly sensitive and highly intuitive, and more so when it’s about their combination, have at least one parent who is also walking these traits, and the place to start observing is how you handle it all yourself.
What helps you regulate?
What are you avoiding as a way to keep yourself feeling safe?
What are your tools, methods, ways of thinking that help you avoid going into overwhelm?
Many parents kind of got used to the noise, kind of got used to the overwhelm.
Did you get used to it?
Is this a teaching you wish to offer your child?
Or maybe you wish to find a way to guide them in both staying aligned to who they are, including their sensitivity and intuition, while also learning how to participate in your world, wherever in the world you are.
Intuition as a compass
Nurturing children’s intuition is needed, important, and a key to so many of our current time challenges.
When one is connected to their inner wisdom, they walk with a clear compass in all of life’s situations.
However, for those also highly sensitive, learning how to regulate first is crucial. We can’t truly and with clarity tune in to our own intuition, wisdom, and knowing for ourselves if we are overwhelmed.
If the first step is to observe yourself, then the second step is to observe your child and learn what helps them regulate, avoid overwhelm, and listen within.
Each child is unique.
Each family is unique.
Your child chose you and trusted that you would know how to guide them, possibly merely by the example and modeling you offer.
If you pressed play or started to read my words with a hope for more specific guidance, then I apologize for the more challenging invitation, and for returning the focus to what you know.
You know!
You know what is aligned and helps you!
You carry that wisdom!
Bring it into your days….
Often, this is exactly what can help your child as well, and the guidance they trusted you would offer them when they chose to be born to you and not to another.
The example of taking a deep breath
The simplest example can be about breath.
Breath brings us back to ourselves.
Don’t just take a deep breath.
Tell your child what you’re doing and why.
If taking a deep breath helps you, it will most likely help them as well.
Stepping into Spiritually Aware Parenting
If the content in this short episode/blog sparked something in your intuition, your inner knowing wants to learn more, then possibly you are one of those for whom I write.
My books focus on the journey to spiritually aware parenting and the soul promises all parents made to their children, shared universal promises versus personal ones.
Spiritually aware parenting has many facets to it. In my journey as a mother and with clients worldwide, I’ve learned that it is always a choice.
We enter spiritually aware parenting through different gateways.
Which gateway?
The Stepping Into Spiritually Aware Parenting: A Parent’s Guide comes to guide you through this exact question.
It is free to download and includes exploration of six gateways into spiritually aware parenting. Each of the gateways is described and then offers some reflective questions, and accordingly, if you find yourself relating to that gateway and wanting to learn more, some suggested next steps.
