Inside: Psychic abilities in children and teens are an additional characteristic of spiritually aware children (spiritually conscious children, spiritually awakened children, spiritual children, intuitive children). What are psychic abilities? Can children show psychic abilities? How to guide your psychic child? Can children be Clairvoyance or Clairaudience?
Introduction
Spiritually aware children walk with an awareness that adults must work hard to awaken to, to remember. This post is part of a sequence of six posts focusing on the beautiful gifts spiritually aware children and teens offer.
The first post in this sequence began by offering an exploration of the context of this discussion and the many questions behind it. We also stopped to ask: What is spirituality? This is a question and definition underlying whether and how we can define our children as spiritually aware or not.
The first post also deepened the discussion of the first characteristic I felt should be brought to awareness: the great wisdom spiritually aware children offer us.
The second post focused on two additional characteristics: higher perspective and the unity of spiritually aware children with nature.
The third post in this sequence focused on three additional characteristics: technological abilities, being on a mission, and serving as a beacon for others.
This post will focus on psychic abilities.
Psychic children
“My daughter says an angel is living in her room.”
D. is three years old. She is kind, loving, and lovable. She often prefers to quietly play with her dolls or toys, unlike her older brother (six years old), who always prefers having friends come over and was also like this at D.’s age.
Holding the social belief that children need to socialize, play, and have friends, D.’s mother was not sure how to relate to D.’s preference to play quietly alone. The mother, like her six-year-old son, still loves having friends over.
One day, D.’s mother asked D. why she did not want to invite over any of her friends from her preschool, and when D. responded that she didn’t need any friends, as G., her angel, was always with her, her mother became alarmed.
D. was aware that her mother could not see G. But based on her mother’s report to me, this didn’t seem to bother her.
When we met, G. indeed accompanied D. Her angel was with her, wherever she went.
L.’s story
L. is nearly 12 years old. Since early childhood, he has been more sensitive than the other children around him. His mother and father approached me after a few months of him not sleeping well. After waiting a long time, knowing that hearing voices is not a conventionally accepted ability, he shared with his parents that since they moved to their new apartment, he hears troubling voices. Very aware, he told them that he always hears voices from the environment, but that until now, it was never an issue for him.
Unusually, it was L.’s father (and not his mother) who reached out to me and shared that he could hear “thoughts” when he was a child, and he added, “I could also see things. Sometimes they were beautiful, but often very scary, so I closed off these abilities deep down. I know L. is not making this up, but I have no idea how to help him.”
Psychic abilities
Psychic abilities fascinate many people. When explicitly observed in children’s behavior, some are drawn to them with amazement. Others back away in fear.
Too often, we make too much of psychic abilities, especially those in children. In this post, I hope to provide a perspective, my perspective, as a guide to how we can view the psychic abilities of children.
As a first assumption, all humans can develop what we refer to as psychic abilities: to see beyond the physical, energies, halos, beings, images of past lives, and more, like both D. and L. in our examples above. We can all tune in to greater knowledge, awareness, and learnings for ourselves or others.
With children, generalizing a bit, the manifestation of psychic abilities will depend on two general criteria:
Are these abilities accepted/nourished?
The first general criterion for manifesting psychic abilities is whether the child’s environment nourishes such abilities. The nourishment does not have to be active, such as deliberately working with a medium, energy healer, or other, to teach the child how to develop their ability. It is often about letting the child spend time in nature, seeing and communicating with natural beings. It can be about their deeper communication with their dog. Or the times they feel they must write stories that come through their heart.
These nourishments are facilitated when another child or adult walks a spiritual path with them. It is often in the little manifestations and rituals, such as lighting candles, telling a mythical story emerging from the heart at bedtime, the books we choose to read, observing mom or dad sitting for meditation, and practicing yoga or breathing techniques. Possibly, it can also be adults or other children around them, talking with each other about little knowings or intuitions they felt guiding them.
All the above examples and many others are little confirmations of something our children already know. Seeing other children or adults talk, read, act, do, or practice even a little act, such as picking up a stone with respect, confirms that what they know is true and validates their own walk with their abilities.
In both D.’s and L.’s examples, their parents needed to accept and reaccept that such abilities exist and are normal. As soon as their families accepted these aspects, both children could more freely explore their abilities instead of hiding them.
Does this soul need these abilities as part of its blueprint for this lifetime?
A second general criterion for manifesting psychic abilities is whether the child needs these abilities as part of the path they came to walk in this lifetime. Do they need to develop these abilities as part of their toolbox, and for them to walk who they are?
We all have the capability to develop psychic abilities, at least to some extent. Not all of us need them to the same extent as part of our walk in this lifetime.
Some of us need to develop our psychic abilities for the arts or the development of new technology. To be able to download an idea and let it come alive. Often, we are not even aware that we are connecting to higher sources of information.
Others need to see into the present, past, and future to be able to mediate healing for others. Some need it for their own healing, and only for a while.
Hence, before we begin to develop all these abilities, we want to ask, for ourselves as well as for our children, which abilities do I need?
This is an important question. Crucial. Carrying such abilities can also be a great burden, especially at young ages, significantly more so if you don’t have someone to talk to and be guided by, about what you are sensing, knowing, or seeing.
Let’s return to D. and L.
I often meet children in my practice who have some psychic abilities. They somehow find their way to meet with me. Spirit is always involved in these connections. They show up for some reason; usually, it’s not because they need anything, but because they ask for guidance or healing for their parents.
They are all beautiful, kind souls, and I am always left in awe of their wisdom. Sometimes it is not even known to them. For example, they are mostly unaware they are serving as a messenger for their parent’s journey.
D.
D., still very young, was unaware of the process she was inviting. It took a while for her mother to agree to question the narrative she was walking with, saying “all children must have many friends and socialize.” As that awareness grew, her ability to accept her daughter, with her angel G., grew as well. She realized that D. was indeed never alone, always watched over.
At such a young age, we could not predict whether D. would develop these abilities and whether she would need more than her family’s confirmation and acceptance of who she was. Please note that D.’s relationship with her angel was fully positive and nourishing. Sometimes, what children perceive as a supportive, energetic friend is not an angel but some friendly entity. These are relationships to explore; my recommendation is to help these relationships end. The reason for that is that while an imaginary friendly entity can be nourishing when young, a layer of unhealthy dependency often develops as the child grows and wishes to become more independent (more about imaginary friends in an upcoming post).
L.
D. was three when we met, and L. was nearly 12, an age when, even if we do not see the physical manifestations of puberty yet, they are already playing a role at the energetic level. For girls, these silent, hidden effects on our energy and the showing of psychic abilities usually start at younger ages.
Our soul’s journey often awakens together with initial physical processes. If one needs their psychic abilities as part of the blueprint they draw up for this lifetime, these abilities will start developing or asking for attention.
This is partially what happened with L. If, at a younger age, it was easy for him to ignore what he heard or use the information he gathered because of his ability to hear beyond sound, now, reaching 12, developing internally, he needed guidance. He asked to work with the gifts he carried. His way of asking for guidance was not based in awareness. He could not sleep, which invited his father to remember he also once walked a similar path.
L.’s father was amazing. When they approached me, he knew he needed to work with me first. He said a full YES to opening the door to regaining his abilities. It was not an easy process for him, as he needed to learn how to walk life in a new way. But, as often happens with devoted parents who will do anything for their children, he found himself. As soon as L.’s father walked towards his path, he was able to guide his son. Guidance coming from one of our parents is always the most precise one: they are the ones we chose to come to.
I never worked directly with L. Only with his father :).
Knowing and intuition: not a psychic ability but a shared possible
There is one element we sometimes refer to as a psychic ability that we all need to nourish. It is not an ability I see as psychic, but it is often referred to as such.
Think of a friend, perhaps yourself, who is amazing in choosing his friends. All of them nice, kind, fun to be with, no negative energies around.
Or maybe, another friend who is always attuned to her inner compass. Guiding her where to go, who to see, or when to stay home.
We all (I hope) know people who walk connected to who they are. And thus, they also know, with clear awareness or without any awareness, how to navigate their lives based on their hearts’ guidance. Hence, walking their path, the one their soul wished to walk. And if not exactly, then close to it. No tremendous deviations.
All humans have this ability. All children can stay true to their essence, knowing how they wish to walk.
Being intuitive and listening to our gut feelings should be the norm. This is not a psychic ability. It is a human ability. An ability that should be nurtured in all of us.
We all wish to follow our inner compass.
Knowing and Intuition are not Psychic Abilities but a Shared Possible
We can all walk connected with the right guidance.
Our Western culture places too much emphasis on the mind’s ability. Schoolwork, fairly early in our children’s education, aims at its (the mind’s) development, focusing on academic thinking and achievement and requiring proof and research for any idea suggested.
Our heart, just as wise as our brain, and our guts, just as knowing, offer us the direction of our soul. Whether we listen to it as intuition, a calling, a knowing, or guidance, a gut feeling or an instinct, we are expanded and connected to something greater than ourselves.
We can all walk attuned to our inner knowing. If this were the case, we would perceive others being attentive to what they know for themselves as ordinary—nothing unique or surprising about it. I look forward to such a day in the future of humanity.
Various appearances of psychic abilities in children
Being able to listen to our subjective truth is only one layer. One that is not psychic. A layer shared by all. All of us, adults and children, can walk attentive to who we are and what is precise for us. It is one of our choices in our life’s journey.
The older we are, the more healing and releasing of limiting beliefs and social conventions this process may require. The younger we are, the better our chances of staying attuned to our essence. That is, if our parents support us in staying who we are.
Many children today show more than inner knowing. They can clearly see beyond what others see. The energy of the trees and flowers. Their auras. Some can see beings walking among us, from lost souls to angels. Others, natural-born seers, see a wider frame of events, visually gaining access to past or future lives, occurrences, or elements not explicitly apparent to others. These young seers can receive their information in flashes, dreams, daydreams, automatic writing, and other forms.
There are children who perceive voices and noises that others don’t. This can be a higher guidance talking to them or may reflect their ability to receive information through a connection to the higher grids of information—collectively termed “the field.” An auditory ability can come with a visual ability or on its own.
Another widespread psychic ability is that of feeling. Feeling the true feelings of those around us. Sometimes even the feelings of people who are emotionally close to us but are living far away. Feeling the feelings of others can be extremely challenging without guidance—much more than other abilities that some children perceive naturally—until they hear an adult speak about it. The feelings often overwhelm children (and adults) without them understanding that these feelings are not theirs.
When empowered with love, psychic abilities bring richness and wholeness to one’s life and are a gift to nourish.
Clair – Clarity
Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance refers to clear seeing: a developed ability for “inner sight” or “sight” in general. Both tapping into one’s intuition and perceiving visual information (images, symbols, energy…) beyond the five senses.
Clairvoyance manifests in various forms. Some walk with all forms, while others may walk with one more prominent form. One may receive information through dreams (daydreams, lucid dreams, and others). Others may be able to visualize (advanced imagination) and perceive information from past and future lives, mediate healing using visualization for themselves or others, or communicate with other unworldly beings. Connecting to symbols and seeing a brief image come to mind are also small, yet significant, manifestations of clairvoyance.
The ability to see, either through one’s inner eye or in the literal world, such as seeing the energy field of others—their aura—is related to activating the sixth chakra: the third eye.
In all forms of seeing, visions can contain literal information. However, for most, the information is more symbolic. It is more challenging for children than adults to discern which information is real and which is symbolic. Everything is very real for them. It is our responsibility to guide them—teaching them how to differentiate (or at least assume that while it may feel real, there is a small chance it may be symbolic) and, in parallel, relate to every piece of information they share with us as significant.
Clairaudience
Clairaudience refers to clear hearing—an ability to hear beyond normal hearing. One may hear more delicate sounds that others don’t hear. These include the sound of plants or still water. Clairaudience also refers to an ability to hear the voices of Spirit in the form of conversation, hearing Spirit ‘talk’ or conversations with the deceased, hearing their messages, although they have passed on.
Clairsentience
Clairsentience refers to the ability to perceive through feelings. Information existing beyond our five senses reaches us through the feelings of or about another person or a situation. One may feel the energy of another or know and receive guidance for themselves based on their own feelings.
Being clairsentience is common. It is very challenging for children as they may be overwhelmed by the overload of emotional information they receive about themselves but mostly from others.
Claircognizance
Claircognizance refers to clear knowing. Some humans just know. Why? How? They are not always able to explain. When these knowings are confirmed, it strengthens their trust in their own truth. The information results from a very quick integration of information downloaded through our intuition and our mind.
Additional abilities
There are many additional abilities under the umbrella of psychic abilities (for example, clairalience, which is perceiving information based on smell). These are less common in children and adults and are beyond the scope of this introduction, which focuses on psychic abilities in spiritually aware children and teens.
Keys for guiding your children or teens
Much can and should be further said about psychic abilities. And I hope to share what I know and meet in my practice soon. Until then, if you feel or know that your child or teen has these gifts, here are a few keys:
- If your child shows a psychic ability, it’s because it’s part of their essence or because they need it for this journey. There is always a reason! We may never know what it is, but we must respect their journey. And as part of our support of their journey, we, the parents, are responsible for supporting them in a positive, empowering way.
- In parallel, we should never make their abilities more than they are. Parents should guide their children and support them in developing their psychic abilities to the same extent as they would support any other significant ability their children show—in the arts, science, or soccer playing.
- Listen to them, and when listening, be highly aware of your facial expressions and all the nonverbal communication you provide. They need you to believe them, become their ally, and share their secret. They will not reveal their seeing or communications with unseen beings unless they fully trust you. Honor their trust, and build their confidence.
When empowered with love, psychic abilities bring richness and wholeness to one’s life and are a gift to nourish.
What psychic abilities does your child show? Did you experience these abilities as a child? Do you experience them now? What can you share with others as guidance?
